Events & Meetings

The Jane Austen Project, founded in October 2009 as Oxford's first and only Jane Austen Society for years, is intended for anyone interested in Austen and her work, to hold meetings to discuss her life and times. In particular, we want to research and perform her music - the corpus of materials which she brought together from libraries, collections and borrowings, and adapted for household use.

Angela at Chawton

We have occasional society meetings, but most of our events are active ones, in Oxford or elsewhere:

Dances - Regency Dance with the Oxford Historical Dance Society
We have associated with OHDS and provided music for their dances, which are always hugely enjoyable - and while costume is optional, it is always very welcome!

Field Trips
In the spring and summer seasons we have had trips to various Austen-related venues:

  • Chawton in Hampshire, home of Jane Austen and family for many years
  • Winchester, where Jane lived her final years and is buried
  • Stoneleigh Abbey near Leamington Spa
  • Blenheim Palace
  • Lyme Regis in Dorset
  • Stowe Gardens in Buckinghamshire.

Albion Beatnik Bookshop Soirees!
We hold frequent Jane Austen Soirees at the Albion Book Shop, Walton Street, Jericho, Oxford - with music, poetry readings, fortune telling and refreshments of wine and food. Keep an eye on this site and the Facebook sites to see what's going on. The admission of £5 is donated to charity.
