Events & Meetings

The Jane Austen Project, founded in October 2009 as Oxford's first and only Jane Austen Society for years, is intended for anyone interested in Austen and her work, to hold meetings to discuss her life and times. In particular, we want to research and perform her music - the corpus of materials which she brought together from libraries, collections and borrowings, and adapted for household use.

The 'Scope' charity shop in Summertown, Oxford asked Frank Underwood, the chair of the Group, together with Gillie Tunley of the Woodley Light Operatic Society to give a musical performance on their premises on Sunday 22nd May, at lunchtime.
This followed up on a very well received evening at the Jane Austen Centre in Bath, on Saturday 14th, at which Frank played guitar to accompany Gillie - which has prompted immediate invitations for a return performance.
Prior to the musical event, there was a costumed photo session in Oxford city centre, between the appropriately styled venue of the Ashmolean Museum frontage at 11am, Beaumont Street and St John's Street, laid out in the 1820s at the end of the Regency period - these photos are being prepared for publication.
They have now decided to call themselves 'Austentation', and under that name are starting to gather invitations to perform at various period venues and events!
